Michelle Throassie, a proud member of Black Lake First Nation and an intergenerational survivor, is pursuing a degree in Indigenous Social Work at the First Nations University of Canada with support from the FG Foundation Scholarship. As a single mother to two boys, she balances her studies with caregiving responsibilities.
The scholarship helped Michelle manage significant financial burdens, including daycare and speech therapy for her youngest child, allowing her to focus on completing her degree. Her education equips her to develop culturally based programs that promote healing and resilience within her community through traditional teachings, outdoor activities, and youth engagement. By addressing the impacts of trauma and addiction, Michelle aims to provide meaningful support to families and community members, contributing to the well-being and cultural continuity of Black Lake First Nation.
Michelle was supported through FG Foundation’s Individual Funding Program. To learn more about how the program supports First Nations individuals in pursuing their educational, cultural, and personal goals visit our Individual Funding Program page.
