Alain Poitras of Abitibiwinni First Nation is an intergenerational survivor who is now reclaiming cultural knowledge. Although his mother attended residential school, she left the community young, creating gaps in the cultural teachings passed down to Alain. As an adult, he is committed to restoring that connection and ensuring his children grow up with the cultural grounding he missed.
Recently, Alain began learning the foundations of hunting and land‑based practices alongside his family. These experiences have strengthened his desire to deepen his cultural knowledge, maintain ancestral lands, and create a place for family gatherings rooted in tradition.
With support from the FG Foundation, Alain will be able to equip his family with essential tools for safe and sustainable land‑based activities, including hunting gear and off‑grid supplies. This support allows him to continue learning, teaching his children, and reconnecting with the land in meaningful ways.
Alain’s journey represents the ongoing revitalization of cultural identity within Indigenous communities. His efforts honour past generations while building a stronger cultural future for his family and community.
